This Day in Music History 9/9/2001: Trey Anastasio of Phish and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Founders John McEuen and Jimmy Ibbotson Performed for Clear Path International

Trey Anastasio was a surprise guest 11 years ago, today when Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Founding Members played a benefit concert for Clear Path International.

What a great night this was! Way back in 2001, Clear Path International was fortunate enough to have John McEuen and Jimmy Ibbotson perform a benefit for us at the old Higher Ground location in Winooski, VT. Halfway through the night, Trey Anastasio of Phish showed up and played with them for the rest of the night.

Sonme of the highlights:
NGDB’s biggest hit Mr. Bojangles
Trey, John and Ibby performing Del McCoury’s Beauty of my Dreams
A beautiful Long, Hard Road which blends perfectly into Darcy Farrow
And a whole bunch of folks coming up on stage one at a time while the three played the Grateful Dead’s Ripple.

I’ll never forget that night and luckily we have high-quality audio. I have picked out a few tunes for the player below.

If you can’t see the player, above, go to this link to listen.

  1. Hi James!

This is absolutely fantastic. Thanks so much for sharing, I am glad that I stumbled across this today.

Is there any chance at getting the rest of the songs that were performed? In lieu of the actual audio, just a complete setlist would also be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the consideration and thanks again for sharing this.

    • Hey- I have the soundboard DAT and at one point had dumped it all onto CD but lost it. I have it somewhere!

      • Well, if you find it (the DAT), I would definitely help convert it again and get it up on eTree. I’m sure lots of other people would appreciate it too. I sent this link to Kevin Shapiro, the archivist at Phish and he really appreciated the info too.

        Thanks again!

        • Right on. I have the DAT. I meant I lost the CD. Email me your address at James at CPI.org and I will send it to you.

          Thanks, Parker!
